Course Offerings: English

Four years of English are required for graduation. English I, II, III, and IV, or IV(H), are the only classes which fill this requirement. All classes emphasize the communication skills: writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Other language arts skills such as vocabulary study and literature investigation, including book reports, speech, and study skills, are also covered. Elective classes may be taken, but they do not count toward the basic four (4) requirements. See exceptions (2015,2115)


2000 ENGLISH I
(1 Unit of Credit)
Emphasis of the class is primarily two-fold: one, the study of grammar and writing, including vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraphing; and two, an examination of various forms of literature -- short stories, drama, non-fiction, and poetry -- concentrating on understanding and interpretation. A shorter unit in speech fundamentals is also included. In addition, a brief unit focusing on non-fiction reading techniques and study skills will be taught.

2010 ENGLISH II
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course is a natural continuation of English I and will add to students' knowledge of drama, non-fiction, poetry, mythology, and world literature. Students will use the literature as a basis for composition work, with a focus on essay and research skills, which will be used in other course work at Lakeview.

2015 DEBATE AND FORENSICS
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course is an elective English credit or a fourth English credit. Students learn effective oral communication skills in the arts of argument, persuasion, exposition and entertainment. Students learn how to argue a case effectively. Students learn appreciation of literature as art through oral presentation.

2020 ENGLISH III
(1 Unit of Credit)
The third course in the required sequence is a combination of American Literature and advanced composition skills. The literature will include a variety of styles, in a chronological sequence, emphasizing major American authors and literary periods. Written work about the literature, as well as methods of research and the production of a well-developed research paper, is presented.

2035 THE 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN EXPERIENCE/ U. S. HISTORY/AMERICAN LITERATURE
(1 Credit of US History/1 Credit of English III per year)
An integrated course in which the events of U.S. History and various genres of American Literature from reconstruction to present day are analyzed through major American authors representative of each historical literary period in the 20th century.
College prep materials and methods are used, including historical novels, primary sources, research, advanced composition, and independent and cooperative projects.

2040 ENGLISH IV
(1 Unit of Credit)
The goals of this class include reading whole work of literature for critical analysis and enjoyment, writing responses to literature of several types, writing technical reports, and using and evaluating the media as consumers.

2100 ENGLISH IV HONORS
(1 Unit of Credit)
(Fulfills English IV requirement)
This class is for the more advanced student preparing for college or business school. It exposes the student to the literature, writing, and discussion that will be encountered as a college freshman. A strong emphasis is placed on entire works and/or major authors, literary eras, and genres. A research paper related to literature is required.

Prerequisite:  B or better in English and teacher recommendation

2110 READING IMPROVEMENT
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course teaches methods to improve reading levels for both average and remedial readers. Adult reading and study skills will be presented, as well as strategies designed to improve reading speed and comprehension. Student works at his/her own level.

Prerequisite:  8th Grade standardized test scores or referral from content area teacher.

2115 PRACTICAL WRITING WORKSHOP
(1 Unit of Credit)
This class offers the opportunity to develop and improve basic writing skills, including business letters, resumes, essays, and short research papers. Students may read short stories and novels and write responses to them. Students will write technical reports and will learn to evaluate the media as consumers.

2120 SPEECH
(1 Unit of Credit)
This introductory course in personal communication provides each student with an opportunity to gain poise and confidence in a variety of speaking activities. Students will learn how to organize and deliver a speech, how to prepare a reading for oral interpretation, and how to lead and participate in group discussion. Debate will also be introduced.

2140 MASS MEDIA
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course is a study of the effects and forms of various media, including newspapers, radio, television, movies, and public art. Students take an active role in acting, producing, and directing programs and commercials.

2145 TELEVISION BROADCASTING
(MASS MEDIA II)
(1 Unit of Credit)
The purpose of this course is to train students to prepare and produce news programs. Students are selected from applications submitted to the instructor. This class is offered 2nd hour only and runs the full year. Students will learn to write scripts, edit, direct, and produce film.

2150 YEARBOOK
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is a workshop course whose purpose is to publish the school yearbook, SPECTUS. Members are selected from applications submitted in early spring. A background in journalism is helpful. All aspects of production are required - selling ads and books, taking pictures, writing copy, and doing layouts and paste-ups. The class is only offered first semester. Some extra-curricular time second semester is required to finish the book. Pick up applications from instructor.

2160 JOURNALISM I

The course teaches the fundamentals of journalism.

Prerequisite:  Have achieved a "B" or better average in any writing class.

2170 JOURNALISM II
(1 Unit of Credit)
The students in this class compose the staff of the student newspaper, THE HUSKY. Pick up applications in the spring from Journalism instructor. This class will run third hour all year.

Prerequisite:  Must have taken Journalism 1 and submit application.

2180 CREATIVE WRITING
(1 Unit of Credit)
This class was designed for those students who enjoy expressing themselves through word artistry. Students will have opportunities to write poetry, short stories, plays, and magazine articles. A benefit of being in the class is the chance to work on Lakeview's creative writing book, Entitled.

2190 HUMANITIES
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is a chronological introduction to the development of western civilization through man's arts and ideas - caveman to Picasso. The appreciation, analysis, and critical awareness of selected works of literature, music, art, architecture, philosophy, and theology are goals of this class. This is a college-preparatory class, but is open to any diligent student.

2200 TECHNICAL INFORMATION SKILL
(1 Unit of Credit)
(Does not satisfy writing requirement.)
The class will include three subject areas: English, business, and auto tech. Its goal is to interweave technical writing skills needed in today's society with knowledge about our present high-tech automobiles. This information will then be processed through the word processor, and desktop publishing will be used to produce a professional manual. Group work will be encouraged.
