8010 H.I. EXPLORING LITERATURE AND DRAMA
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is an overview of literature--including myths, legends, folk and fairy tales, and drama.

8030 H.I. READING AND LANGUAGE IMPROVEMENT I
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course is directed at improving reading comprehension and oral/written language skills.

This is a continuing course directed at improving reading comprehension and oral/written language skills.

This class is designed to analyze the components of a story; i.e., setting, characterization, plot, and theme. Focus will also be placed on study skills to enhance and promote reading comprehension.

8060 H.I. WRITING AND VOCABULARY IMPROVEMENT I

This is a language-development class with emphasis on vocabulary and writing improvement.

The study of living things, including the human body and its’ systems, is the focus of this course.

The land, air, and waters of the earth are studied. A unit on the environment and ecology is included.

This course satisfies the U.S. History graduation requirement for hearing impaired students.

This course focuses on the study of world history from a global perspective.

8160 H.I. GOVERNMENT AND CONSUMER ECONOMICS

This class satisfies the government and economic graduation requirement for hearing impaired students.

8180 H.I. WORLD GEOGRAPHY
(1 Unit of Credit)
The study of the land forms, climates, and cultures of the countries of the world is included. This course satisfies the World Studies graduation requirement for hearing impaired students.

8210 H.I. HEALTH
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course covers mental and physical well-being. Topics include nutrition, substance abuse, major illnesses, first aid, and human sexuality.

8220 H.I. PERSONAL GROWTH AND INDEPENDENT LIVING
(1 Unit of Credit)
This course is directed at improving conversational skills, social skills, problem solving, and other transition skills toward independence, such as assistive devices, job applications, and resumes. This is a required class for all hearing impaired students. (Beginning with the class of 1998)

8225 H.I. OCCUPATIONAL MATH

This class is tailored to meet the individual math needs of the HI student. It focuses on math use in fields such as drafting, nursing, etc.

This course is designed to provide time for the mainstreamed H.I. student to receive support from the H.I. teacher. A portion of this class will be spent on improving writing skills.

This class is tailored to the individual math needs of the students. It reviews and reinforces math skills and concepts needed for daily living.

This class is tailored to the individual math needs of the students. It focuses on consumer-related mathematical problem- solving skills.

8300 L. D. LITERATURE SURVEY I / L. D. WRITTEN LANGUAGE I/ENGLISH 2
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is an English class which surveys short stories, with emphasis on mystery and science fiction, short works of non-fiction, and journalism. These are combined with basic grammar review and paragraph development, beginning with short compositions based on readings and resulting in a career investigation essay.

8305 L. D. LITERATURE SURVEY II/ L. D. WRITTEN LANGUAGE II/ENGLISH 3
(1 Unit of Credit)
This English class surveys folklore around the world, classical novels, and drama. These are combined with narrative writing and continuing paragraph/essay writing based on readings, resulting in a career investigation research paper.

8310 L. D. ENGLISH I/KEYBOARDING
(1 Unit of Credit)
The fundamental skills taught in this class include keyboarding, spelling, punctuation and creative writing ,as well as reading classes and paragraph development.

8315 L. D. READING IMPROVEMENT / L.D. PRACTICAL WRITING
(1 Unit of Credit)
This English class emphasizes vocabulary development, spelling, language experience, and reading for meaning, combined with basic writing skills necessary for beginning career investigation.

8330 L.D. MASS MEDIA/JOURNALISM (1 Unit of Credit) This class interprets newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, movies and the Internet. Students will become critical observers of the media and will create related projects.

World Studies is designed to survey the impact of people’s existence on earth. The emphasis is on the development of themes that influence our society through the interrelationship of geography, history, and culture. Students will be introduced to cultural, economic, physical, and political similarities and differences as well as historical personalities on various continents of the world. Students will gain an understanding of both the variety of cultures world-wide and the commonalities of all people.

The class emphasizes consumer credit, the stock market, career opportunities, banking and interest rates, consumer purchasing, and budgeting. It also covers the origins of our local, state, and federal governments, the constitution and how it works, and the role of our government in our daily lives.

Earth Science includes the study of geology, oceanography, meteorology and space science. Assignments include research in the library and on the internet, career exploration and problem solving.

This is a survey course, dealing with the general topics of chemistry and physics. It is designed to give each student a lab-oriented introduction to the major topics in the physical sciences.

8410 L.D. BIOLOGY
(1 Unit of Credit)
The subject matter is basic. The course of study includes microscopic organisms, plant and animal systems, genetics, and ecology. Animals of various phyla are dissected. Emphasis is placed primarily on factual information rather than concepts.

8415 L.D. PERSONAL GROWTH I & TRANSITION PLANNING
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is a social studies class that orients the student to the high school setting; it explores feelings, identifies personal strengths, examines conflicts with peers, parents, and the community; discusses sexual values and includes substance abuse education; and combines with transition planning for the future based on a student’s interests and strengths.

8425 L.D. PERSONAL GROWTH II/L.D. HEALTH
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is a social studies/health class which focuses on a positive self-image; it explores male-female relationships, human sexuality, and family dynamics; discusses value issues, mental and physical well-being, nutrition, substance abuse, and major illnesses; and examines future goals and lifestyle transitions.

8430 G. L. I. P.
(Group Language Intervention Program)
(1 Unit of Credit)
This is a class for those students designated speech and language impaired. The class covers vocabulary development, cognitive skill development, practical/social language improvement, and various other language functions. It serves as an English or elective credit. It can be taken once each year.
